GENERATION #9: John Henry Owsley and Lillie Bell Sylar

John Henry Owsley born 23-Aug-1907, Union County, Tennessee, married 30-Jul-1927, in Ooltewah, Hamilton County, Tennessee, Lillie Bell Sylar, born 12-Jun-1908, Ringgold, Catoosa County, Georgia, (daughter of William Luther Sylar and Callie Fryar) died 28-Jun-1992, Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tennessee, buried: Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery, Ooltewah, Hamilton County, Tennessee. John died 15-Jan-1947, Ooltewah, Hamilton County, Tennessee, buried: Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery, Ooltewah, Hamilton County,Tennessee.

John Henry Owsley was the fourth child of Henry Berry Owsley and Susan Harriet Rogers. John was raised in the Lead Mine Bend area of Union County, Tennessee.

Around 1926, John moved to Ooltewah, Tennessee in Hamilton County, just outside of Chattanooga.

John's oldest sister married George Paris Walker. They also moved to Ooltewah. They moved down the Tennessee River on a raft carrying all of their belongings.

While still single, John lived for a short time in Kokomo, Indiana. In 1927, John married Lillie Bell Sylar in Ooltewah, Tennessee. John and Lillie Bell lived for short periods of time in Knoxville, Tennessee and Lone Mountain, Claiborne County, Tennessee. John and Lillie Bell raised their children in the Ooltewah area.

John was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge in Chattanooga, Tennessee. John and Lillie Bell attended the Crossroads Baptist Church in Ooltewah. Lillie Bell was later a member of the 34th Street Baptist Church in Chattanooga. John played the guitar.

John became ill and died in 1947. He was buried at the Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery in Ooltewah. The land for the cemetery was given by George Paris Walker and Mary Owsley Walker.
