William Duff to William Alexander
This Indenture made on the fifteenth day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty six, between William Duff of the one part and William Alexander of the other part both in the County of Washington and Commonwealth of Virginia witnessed that the said William Duff for and in consideration of the sum of five shillings current money of Virginia to him in hand paid by the said William Alexander the receipt he doth hereby acknowledge the said William Duff hath granted bargained and sold and by these presents doth grant bargain and sell unto the said William Alexander and his heirs and assigns one certain tract or parcel of land containing one hundred and fifty nine acres be the same more or less lying and being in the County of Washington and lying on the north side of the Holstein river, and granted to the said William Duff by Patent bearing date the twentieth day of June one thousand seven hundred and eighty five and is bounded as followeth To wit Beginning at a white oak a corner for the said Duff and Alexanders land thence for a dividing line North fifty two degrees East sixty four poles crossing a draught to a large poplar, North seventy five degrees East one hundred and ten poles on Duffs Patent line, and with the patent line North twenty six poles to a white oak, North thirty three degrees West one hundred and sixty four poles to two Chesnutt trees in a sink hole fifty seven degrees west one hundred and fifty one poles to three white oaks on the South side of a Knobb, South twenty degrees East one hundred and two poles to a black oak, South thirty three degrees East forty four poles to the Beginning. Together with its appurtenances thereto belonging To have and to hold the said tract of land with its appurtenances unto the said William Alexander and his heirs and assigns forever, and the said William Duff will forever warrant and defend the said tract of land with its appurtenances unto the said William Alexander and his heirs against the claims of all persons whatsoever. William and Anne Alexander to John Gilliland
This Indenture made the third day of January one thousand seven hundred and ninety five between William Alexander and Anne his wife of the County of Greene in the Territory of the United States South of the river Ohio of the one part and John Gilliland of the County of Washington in the State of Virginia of the other part Witnessed that the said William Alexander and Anne his wife for and in consideration of the sum of three hundred and thirty four dollars to thence in hand paid Do bargain and sell unto the said John Gilliland and his heirs one certain tract or parcel of land in the said County of Washington lying on the North side of the middle fork of Holston river conveyed to the said William Alexander by William Duff by Indenture of bargain and sale Recorded in the County Court of Washington containing one hundred and fifty nine acres be the same more or less and is bounded as followeth, to wit To wit Beginning at a white oak a corner for the said Duff and Alexanders land thence for a dividing line North fifty two degrees East sixty four poles crossing a draught to a large poplar, North seventy five degrees East one hundred and ten poles on Duffs Patent line, and with the patent line North twenty six poles to a white oak, North thirty three degrees West one hundred and forty four poles to two chesnut trees in a sink hole to fifty seven degrees west one hundred and sixty one poles to three white oaks on the South side of a Knobb, South twenty degrees East one hundred and two poles to a black oak, South thirty three degrees East forty four poles to the Beginning with all its appurtenances To Have And To Hold the said tract or parcel of land with all its appurtenances unto the said John Gilliland and his heirs to the sole use and behalf of him the said John Gilliland and his heirs forever And the said William Alexander and Anne his wife for themselves and their heirs do covenant with the said John Gilliland and his heirs that they the said William Alexander and Anne his wife and their heirs the said tract or parcel of land and all its appurtenances unto the said John Gilliland and his heirs against all persons whoever will forever warrant and defend. In witneesed whereof the said William Alexander and Anne his wife have hereunto subscribed their names and affixed their seals the day and year first above written.

The Commonwealth of Virginia to William Rankin and James Maken justices greetings, Whereas William Alexander and Anne his wife by their Indenture of bargain and sale bearing date the 3rd day of January 1795 have sold and conveyed unto John Gilliland one hundred and fifty nine acres of land with its appurtenances lying and being in the County of Washington, and whereas the said Anne cannot conveniently travel to our said County Court of Washington to make acknowledgment of the said Conveyance. Therefore we do give unto you or any two or more of you power to receive the acknowledgment which the said Anne shall be willing to make before you of the conveyance aforesaid contained in the said Indenture which is hereto annexed and we do therefore command you that you personally go to the said Anne and receive her acknowledgment of the same and examine her privily and apart from the said William Alexander her husband whether she doth the same freely and voluntarily without his persuasion or threats? And whether she be willing that the same should be recorded in our County Court of Washington aforesaid that you distinctly and openly certify us thereof we our said Court under your hands and seals sending this there the said Indenture and this writ. Witness John Campbell Clerk of our said Court at the courthouse this 7th day of March 1795 in the 19th year of our foundation.

Pursuant to a commission from the Court of Washington County, Virginia, to us directed we have proceeded to examine Anne Alexander, wife of William Alexander, privily and apart from the said William Alexander her husband and do hereby certify the said Court that the said Anne did in our presence declare that she willingly signed and sealed the writing hereunto annexed which we then shown and explained to her by us and consented that the same should be recorded Given under hand and seal this 7th day of March 1796.

At a Court held for
Washington County the 17th day of March 1795. This Indenture of bargain and sale was proved by the oaths of Andrew Russell and Alexander Doran two of the witnesses thereto and at a Court held for the said County the 17th day October 1797 It was further proved by the oath of John McCally a witness thereto and together with the commission annexed and certificate of the execution thereof ordered to be recorded.
